Kosher dining has come to Mr. Jefferson’s university! The University community can enjoy kosher meals at Observatory Hill and Newcomb residential dining rooms through an agreement between the University of Virginia, the Brody Jewish Center, and UVa Dining.

All of the meals are prepared in the Brody Jewish Center's kosher kitchen under supervision and then delivered to the residential dining rooms.   Customers may request a hot meal featuring an entree and sides any day of the week. UVa Dining also delivers fresh prepared sandwiches and salads to the residential dining rooms daily, Monday-Thursday, giving customers a choice of two sandwiches, an entree salad, or a hot meal with an entree and sides during the week.

Available under the brand Katz’s Kosher Delicatessen from the deli counter, each new kosher offering is designed to be an entire meal by itself; customers can also help themselves to any of the food offerings in the residential dining rooms.   The new menu includes kosher meats, yet doesn’t require separate kosher serving and dining areas which enables students who require kosher food to eat together with other students.
"The University and UVa Dining have been incredible partners to bring kosher dining to Grounds,” according to Brian Cohen, former Executive Director of the Brody Jewish Center. “Jewish students no longer have to consider their dietary needs when applying to the University of Virginia.   Most importantly, the food tastes great."

The rotating menu includes:

Sandwiches:

  • Pastrami on Rye
  • Tuna Salad Sub
  • Smoked Turkey Breast Sub
  • Egg Salad Sub
  • Italian Sub
  • Corned Beef on Rye

Entrée Salads:

  •  Grilled Chicken Salad
  •  Chef Salad
  •  Spinach Salad
  •  Oriental Chicken Salad

Hot Meals:

  • Roast Chicken Dinner
  • Stuffed Cabbage Dinner
  • Broiled Salmon Dinner
  • Pot Roast with Gravy Dinner
The Brody Jewish Center also provides free kosher dinners every Friday evening, on holidays and throughout Passover. For more information on kosher dining at UVa, please contact Jake Rubin.
