How many Jewish students are at the University of Virginia?
There are an estimated 1,000 Jewish undergraduate and 400 Jewish graduate students at the University of Virginia.
How many members does the Brody Jewish Center have?
None! There is no such thing as "membership" at the Brody Jewish Center. Everyone is welcome to be a participant in any of the programs that we offer. Last year we saw more than 700 Jewish students at least once during the year.
How active is the Jewish community?
The University of Virginia’s Jewish community is very active. More than 700 students participate in Jewish life. Weekly Friday night dinners at the Brody Jewish Center attract more than 75 students, and the Brody Jewish Center has sent more than 400 students to Israel in the 4 years.
Is there a Hillel building?
Yes! The Brody Jewish Center is located at 1824 University Circle. Take Rugby Road away from the University and make a left at the first traffic light. The building is on the left hand side. Students can either walk or take the shuttle from old or new dorms. It is approximately a 15 minute walk from new dorms.
What does the Brody Jewish Center offer besides programming?
You name it! We are well-known and involved in many aspects of life on Grounds. Our staff works closely with faculty and administration on many projects. We offer resources and support of all kinds for our students. Our professional staff is always available for students. The Brody Jewish Center building is open to students who want to hang out, watch TV, or study. Our library is always quiet and our building has high-speed wireless internet!
Who runs the Brody Jewish Center?
Although the Brody Jewish Center does have a staff, the organization is structured like many others at the University in that it is student led. More than 75 students hold leadership positions within the organization. The Jewish Leadership Council is the student governing body over the many groups at the Brody Jewish Center.
How is the Brody Jewish Center funded?
The Brody Jewish Center is actually a registered nonprofit, funded almost entirely through grants, allocations by Federations and Foundations, and gifts from alumni, parents, and community members. Donations from individuals make up more than 60% of our annual operating budget, and this support is vital for us to be able to do the important work we do.
Is there a Jewish Studies program at UVa?
Yes. The University of Virginia Jewish Studies Program is an interdisciplinary program that emphasizes Jewish civilization and community. In coursework with over 25 faculty members from diverse departments and in extracurricular lectures, colloquia and cultural programs, students learn to examine all aspects of Jewish society, literature, language, culture, and history.
Can I study Hebrew at UVa?
Yes! UVa currently offers six semesters of modern Hebrew- two semesters in each level: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. In addition, UVa offers four semesters of classical Hebrew as well the option for an independent study.
Is the Brody Jewish Center only for Jewish students?
No! Everyone is welcome at the Brody Jewish Center. Please feel free to bring your non-Jewish friends. We're always glad to answer questions for anyone who is curious about Jewish life. Our non-judgmental environment allows all students to feel comfortable.
Do you offer anything special for first year students?
Yes. In addition to some programming specifically geared towards first year students, the Brody Jewish Center offers a first year leadership development program.
Is there kosher food at the University of Virginia?
Through a partnership between Aramark, the University of Virginia, and the Brody Jewish Center, the University does provide kosher food in the Newcomb and Observatory Hill dining halls. There is no extra charge for kosher food and students simply register for the regular meal plan and contact [email protected] about their needs.
