Student Leaders Prepare for Impactful Year on Grounds

On August 20, the Jewish Leadership Council (JLC) and the Hillel Engagement Interns gathered for a retreat at Triple C Camp in Charlottesville. The two groups of Jewish leaders spent the weekend collaborating, training, and preparing for the upcoming year. We participated in a variety of workshops to get us thinking about our own Jewish stories, and how we can create and foster a Jewish community here on Grounds. Whether it was practicing having coffee dates, going on a scavenger hunt around the campground or sitting around the campfire talking, the retreat taught us all important skills for the upcoming year, like communication, collaboration, and active listening.

In years past, only JLC has been present at the Leadership retreat; however, this year the Engagement Interns were invited, as well. During the weekend, the two groups talked about how the members can work together to support each other and build a greater sense of Jewish community. 

I am one of seven Engagement Interns. The role of an Engagement Intern is to create and enhance programs on Grounds for Jewish students that ultimately connect them to the Jewish community in a way that is personally meaningful. The interns are broken up into four smaller groups to target specific communities: Greek Life, Arts and Culture, Social Justice, and Birthright. As one of the Birthright Interns, I help with Birthright recruitment this winter and plan follow-up programs that further connection following the trip to Israel. 

The retreat was an opportunity for brainstorming programs for the school year. It was a valuable experience for me to learn more about my position and expectations. It was also a chance to outline goals for engaging students in Jewish life on grounds. I am excited to begin my role as an Engagement Intern and get to know more Jewish students at UVa. I also cannot wait to have a hand in planning a fantastic Birthright trip to Israel this winter!
